“Y’all Got It Goin’ On Down There in Midway!”

There’s a magic in Midway, Alabama. At first glance it looks like just another one-gas-station town with a Dollar General. But stop and meet with the folks and you’ll feel a positive energy you didn’t expect.

Midway has worked to transform racial tensions into racial congruence. It’s a place where blacks and whites have learned to appreciate one another and work together for the good of the whole. This is one reason Midway feels it has the strength to become a leader for the whole county development.

Midway, a rural town of 650 people, is a hub that serves a much larger community of almost 10,000 people located in surrounding towns and small unincorporated townships within a 15-mile radius. We call this “THE MIDWAY WHEEL.”

People of Midway often hear people say, “Y’all got it ‘going on’ down there in Midway!” Why do they say that? It’s because of the spirit that is here — an eagerness in a lot of folks to show up, get their hands in projects and devote time to making tomorrow better.

midway Revitalization

Schools pretty much make small rural communities, and Merritt Elementary was no exception. Merritt contributed a lot to peoples’ lives, and its closing hurt the residents on a deep level.

The Midway community is very rural and lacks the amenities people need and want for themselves, for their children and for their elders. The nearest schools, learning and recreational opportunities, healthcare services and social gathering facilities are in Union Springs. It takes over 15 minutes to drive there from Midway and much longer for those in many of the surrounding townships.

Now is your chance to change this. Unite with other community leaders and residents and bring your super powers to transform the shuttered Merritt Elementary School campus into a thriving community complex for health, learning, recreation and jobs.

Revitalizing Merritt is going to create a new source of pride and make “The Midway Wheel” a place where people want to stay, live and work … and a place that will attract visitors, new residents and businesses.
